In most cases only the tooth crown is visible in the mouth. The root is under the gingiva (gumline) and is anchored to the bone. In some cases, when the person has had gum problems or has brushed very hard, a part of the root can be visible in the mouth. The root contains a central part known as the root canal. This area may be involved when someone has a dental abscess or infection. In this case, the treatment of a root canal abscess is completed (usually by an endodontic) by removing the material from the live channel and replacing it with a filling material. This saves the tooth from the extraction (pulting the tooth). The teeth are composed of four different types of material: enamel, dentin, pulp and cement. The enamel covers the tooth crown and is the hardest substance in the body. The cement is the substance that covers the root of the tooth. The dentin is under the glaze and dentin and is much smoother. When a cavity forms in the enamel and continues in the dentin, it progresses very quickly to the pulp, as the dentin is very soft. The pulp is in the center of the tooth (root channel), and contains the nerves and blood vessels that supply the tooth sensations of sensitivity or tooth pain.
