The objective of this research study was to determine whether the weight gain is associated with tamoxifen therapy and to observe the impact of the weight gain on recurrence and survival. Prognostic indicators, weight changes and condition of disease were studied from diagnosis to the end of treatment in 200 consecutive patients with stage I and II breast cancer, without receiving systemic chemotherapy, admitted from 1986 to present, with 3-5 years observation periods. In all patients, an average weight gain of 1.2 Kgs was observed; however, weight gain was not significantly different for those who received tamoxifen vs. those who did not receive tamoxifen (P = 0.66%, 95% CI for difference -1,8 Kgs to +1,2 Kgs). The weight gain during tamoxifen treatment was not correlated with the duration of treatment or with recurrence or survival. The age of diagnosis was positively correlated with weight gain in all groups. Our data did not show that tamoxifen is associated with weight gain. The moderate weight gain observed in this patient population is comparable to the population without ageing disease and may not be related to treatment. These findings can help relieve some concerns of both doctors and patients when tamoxifen is the medication of choice for adjuvant therapy.
